Starting a Greeting Card Business
Greeting cards are a huge industry in today's society. There are cards to mark almost every occasion, such as holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. There are cards that offer thanks, condolences, and congratulations. Then, there are cards that express sentiments of affection and love. The types of greeting cards out there vary widely as well. There are sweet cards, cute cards, funny cards, ornate cards, simple cards, and even musical cards!
If you're creative and love writing and art, why not look into starting a greeting card business? There are several ways to accomplish this. You can start your own greeting card company, where you create your cards from start to finish. This may not bring in a lot of money at first, but there is a possibility that your cards could be picked up by retailers or purchased by large greeting card companies, which can lead to big bucks! Start small, and market your line of cards to small retailers and on the Internet. If you have success with the smaller markets, you can work your way up to presenting your cards to industry leaders.
Another option when it comes to starting a greeting card business is to focus on one aspect of greeting card creation. For example, you could create greeting card art that you sell to card companies. Or, you could be a greeting card writer if art isn't your thing. Often, card companies will buy card ideas from freelance writers. The best thing to do is decide which companies you'd like to write for or provide artwork for by studying different cards. Then, send a professionally typed letter to each company, asking for submission guidelines. These guidelines will educate you on the exact way each company prefers to receive their submissions from freelancers.
Another good idea is to read as many books on the subject of starting a greeting card business that you can find. One great choice: How to Write and Sell Greeting Cards, Bumper Stickers, T-Shirts and Other Fun Stuff by Molly Wigland.
The greeting card world is a great place for a writer or artist to make a living! Designing, writing, or providing artwork for cards can be a lucrative business that you'll love!
