Starting a Home Business

Every commuter, no matter how little or how far they have to travel to get to work, have at least at one time had the same dream - working from home. Not having to get up to an alarm clock at the same time every workday morning and not being forced into work attire are dreams that to most seem unrealistic. They also dream of being their own boss. They imagine a life where they are in total control, they make the decisions, and they work the schedule that best fits their lifestyle. This dream need not be a pipe dream that can never be fulfilled. Stop dreaming and start working towards owning a home business. As you commute to work, use the time to start planning and preparing to make your dreams a reality.

Like most people in our society, you are probably tired of being stuck in the same old 9 to 5 rut. Increasingly, people are finding alternatives to the rat race, and one of those alternatives is to start a home business.

The first thing to do when considering a home business is to decide exactly what kind of business you would like to start. It's good to start by making a list of things you enjoy doing, plus the things you are good at. Almost anything you're passionate about can be turned into a profitable home business with a little creativity and lot of hard work.

If you love working with children, for example, you could start a day care in your home. Or maybe you're an artist at heart, so why not sell your artwork on your own website? The huge online auction site eBay is also a great place for artists to find buyers for their works. Many artists are currently making a very good living this way. If you love to write, you can start a freelance writing business. Do you love to garden? Why not start a greenhouse in your backyard and sell exotic flowers? If you're skilled at designing websites, you could easily start a desktop publishing or graphic design business working from your home with only a computer!

However, even the very best home business idea won't get off the ground without the right preparation. First you need to be sure to obtain any necessary licenses. Check with your local authorities to find out what licenses you will need for your particular business. You will also need some way to keep track of your business finances. I recommend using software like Quicken or Microsoft Money, which can track and organize all your profits and expenses.

You are also going to need to do some advertising. You could have the best product or service in the world, but without good advertising, no one will ever know about it. As far as advertising is concerned, the sky's the limit! You can utilize traditional media like television, radio and print ads or you can advertise online using your own website.

Running a home business may require changing your entire lifestyle, so carefully weigh all the pros and cons of starting a home business. It often takes awhile for a new home business to become established, so make sure you have an alternate source of income to live on in the meantime.

With a give it lot of thought, a little luck and a whole lot of hard work, you can join the many people who successfully run profitable home businesses!
